CigarBox
P.O.S.
CigarBox is maturing, version 1.1.7 is here.
The term "work in progress" still applies, but here is what you get so far!
No fancy graphics (well mostly, it can't look too boring).
This means the application is smaller and less demanding of your resources.
Completely portable. Should work on Windows 95, 98, 98SE, 2000, ME, NT, XP. It does not write to the registry (install/uninstall makes two unimportant entries), instead the *.ini file system is used to store parameters. Data files are saved in *.csv format (more about this later). You can actually copy all relevant folders, paste them onto another PC's C:\ drive and ... away you go.
Simple, fast, uncluttered and uncomplicated. We'll try to keep it this way.
Requirement of a mouse is kept to a minimum and it is Touch Screen friendly.
Development is geared towards emulating the basic features of a cash register driven by a PC.
Current Features:
Price Look Up (PLU) system for storing items.
PLU Inventory
Up to 99 PLU groups (departments).
12 customizable Department/PLU speedbuttons.
Item % or $ discounts.
Daily Transaction reports.
Period to Date Transaction reports.
Audit Transaction journal.
POS receipt printer support.
Four (4) programmable tax rates with low limit and exemption functions.
Simple Rich-Text and Grid report display and print.
Four levels of User security.
CSV (Comma Separated Value) data file system.*
Clerk functions & Totals.
Five (5) Media totals with split tendering.
* Since CSV file formatting is used, this makes it incredibly easy for popular spreadsheet applications like to read the data. Once loaded into one of these, you can manage, display and print the data in any fashion that strikes your fancy (hence the limited reporting functions).
Planned Features:
SQL support
Additional support for peripheral devices.
Basic
Premise of CigarBox:
Many vertical market retail applications
are way over the top in terms of features. While they are
terrific for power users, chain stores (mid to large retailers), many
are pointless overkill for single user, single store scenarios.
Typical proprietorships have neither the money, time, will or
knowledge to make use of the capabilities offered by more
sophisticated applications. CigarBox is designed (at least
that's the intent) to appeal to the single user, techno-neophyte who
wants a little PC power that behaves like a simple cash register. The
user interface is built for speed to use the mouse as little as
possible and keep keyboard actions to a minimum. Without a
doubt CigarBox will evolve into something else over time, but
simplicity is the goal.
