hi all,
i wanted to make my own portable wii and have got a rvl pms, the original one not from 4 layer tech. I was looking online and found out you need a pms pd to run the rvl pms and the pms pd 3 is a bit expensive as to ship to the uk so i was wondering can i just use a charging module from aliexpress that outputs 5v and solder it to the chrg and gnd pad thanks.

Unfortunately, the V2 and V3 PMS-PD boards are not backwards compatible with the V1 RVL-PMS. The handling for charging was overhauled in V2. Fortunately, you don't *need* a PMS-PD module to run any of the PMS boards. The PMS-PD just makes USB-C charge and play a simple affair for the end user by maximising power supply compatibility. I don't remember the full range of accepted "dumb" voltages that the V1 PMS will accept, but I do remember that 12V3A was reccommended. Any dumb 12V3A DC supply or off the shelf PD module that can negotiate 12v will work just fine.

Correct. You need batteries connected for it to work, it won't run off wall power alone. Make sure to wire your cells in parallel rather than series, the PMS can only accept 3.7v pack arrangements. If you connect a 7.4v pack, it'll kill the PMS.

does that mean if i connect 2 batteries in series it will kill the pms?

Yes. For the PMS you must connect the cells in parallel, so all the positive ends of your cells together and all of the negative ends of your cells together. The voltage range for the pack should be between 3.2 and 4.2 volts. If it's any higher, you've made a mistake or one of your cells is overcharged and a fire risk. I've attached a diagram for your reference

The gist is:
  • Parallel adds capacity together while keeping the same voltage
  • Series adds voltage together while keeping the same capacity
