I'm Austin Shelton, and I’m excited to join the BitBuilt community! My main interest here is N64 modding, specifically with the goal of creating a portable N64 console. This idea stems from a personal project I started when I was about 16 or 17—I'm 28 now. Back then, I was inspired by the amazing work of modders like G-Man and others who were highly active at the time. Maybe I'm mis remembering the active members....been so long ....even had the chance to chat with some of them, which really fueled my passion for the project.
I got pretty far with my N64 portable back then. I built a custom case using Bondo and a pencil box, which turned out surprisingly neat, and I would bring it to school to show my classmates. They were genuinely impressed! Unfortunately, my project stalled due to my limited knowledge and lack of soldering skills at the time. Wiring up a screen correctly was my biggest hurdle, and despite being so close to finishing, I had to abandon the project.
Now that I’m older and (hopefully) wiser, I want to give this dream another shot. However, I’ve noticed a lot has changed in the scene since I was last active. Many of the forums and resources I relied on back then have disappeared, and I’ve lost most of the knowledge I had. I’m essentially starting from scratch, but I’m determined to make it work this time.
I’d love any advice, resources, or pointers to help me get back into N64 modding. I’m planning to pick up a spare N64 board soon and see what I can do. If there are any updated guides, tutorials, or tools you’d recommend for someone getting back into the scene, I’d greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance, and I’m looking forward to learning from this awesome community!
As a little side project that I've been working on lately I've been turning my Android into a DIY steam deck of sorts and this sort of is the same spirit as modding used to be before 3D printing was a thing I could have 3d printed this but I wanted to try to do it the old way like I used to do when I was a kid. I hope this gives you an idea of what I can do I think with a little bit of ingenuity. I managed to take a gamepad wire it up into a hub and make the hub and the gamepad all in one and now I'm able to have external storage whenever I put my phone into the gamepad and HDMI out and USB ports as a whole and it's pretty nifty for emulation and winlator
