Just started work on my first ever portable. An Ashida seemed like both something I'd really like to have and a good first project. I cut up both a cheap knockoff GameCube controller and the Ashida case files so I could print it out on my A1 Mini and ran it off in some cyberpunky colors of PLA I had lying around.

Felt great in the hands and loved the size of it, so I decided to commit to the project, ordered all the parts (including a white nylon case from PCBWay and some matching Rit DyeMore) and some are starting to arrive:

Harvested some necessary components from a donor GameCube controller (thank you for your sacrifice!)

And after softmodding and testing, we begin prepping the patient for surgery...

Wow, so cool man.I really love the color of your blue case !
Thank you! That's Bambu Lab PLA Basic Turquoise. I think it looks quite a lot like the "emerald blue" GameCube controller. I hope the white nylon plus the blue dye ends up looking as good as the test print. PCBWay had the option to dye it for me but it was a big upcharge so I decided to risk it and dye it myself. It's supposed to be pretty easy from what I've seen online. Here's hoping it turns out well!

My 4LayerTech boards arrived and I started populating them.

I also dyed the front half of the case and... uh...

Several problems here. First off, it's way greener than it looks in this photo. It's not at all the color I was going for. Also the dye job is mottled and inconsistent. Also as you can see along the bottom bezel, the plastic warped from the heat. What went wrong here?

Well, for one thing, I accidentally ordered the wrong material! I meant to order PA12 nylon but accidentally ordered UTR 8360 resin instead. I hope the off color is due to the wrong material.

I've gone ahead and ordered another print from PCBWay, this time in the correct material. I'm going to try dying it myself again, but if it comes out ugly again I might have to just paint it or something... or pay the $40 per-part upcharge to get PCBWay to dye it for me. =/
