Hey this is just an intro post to my current project. Which is to make an extended battery new 2dsxl using the o3ds extended battery. I would use the Dremel and grip method but I really don’t wanna Dremel into my limited edition 2ds.

I think the major issue with this specific console is design wise I’ll have to redesign the whole backplate(and probably L and R buttons) and I may even have to 3d print a new stylus holder for the now extended backplate.

I was also wondering if anyone had any suggestions on design. Like how I was thinking if I wanted to keep the old design for the aux jack and pen I’d have to move and re-solder the jack in the new location.

It looks like you can buy a larger 1650mah battery for the New Nintendo 2DS Console
vs the 1500mah battery

check the eBay website for:

Upgraded 1650mAh Battery Repair Screwdriver Kit Tools f Nintendo 2DS XL JAN-001

Sadly a lot of these 3rd party “extended” batteries are scams. So while it has some good reviews no one has confirmed the actual Mah in the comments. I’ll do a bit more research tho.

Very fun project idea, the 2DS/3DS console lines deserve some hardware mods!
I think that modifying as little of the n2DS Xl as possible would be best, it'll make it a lot easier.
I'd suggest taking some inspiration from the designs that the extended battery products on the other 3DS models use:

You could modify just the lower shell to expose the battery compartment and add some latches/screw holes to accept a custom extended battery cover.
Kinda like going from the original rear shell, looking something like this...

To this style of design that's used on the other extended battery products like this:

Where the black part is the extended battery and the uppermost white part is a new battery cover that you'd screw onto the new lower cover, the lowest white part.
That way, you hopefully wouldn't need to change the stylus, cartridge cover, audio jack, or shoulder buttons and it might even be reversible.
If you wanted to start on a design like that, I'd suggest starting by creating a 3D model of the existing n2DS XL lower cover as is.
Then, you can start modifying it.
However you end up designing it, I look forward to seeing your progress, best of luck!

This is a really good idea.

I’m currently waiting for wesk to scan the 2ds xl for a basis however I know this will take awhile cause I only just put in my donation and request.

The 2ds xl battery sits in a little cradle on the motherboard. So I maybe able to try and combine that into a modified version of the current backplate and 3d print the thick back plate that sticks out over the current hardware

However mind you this all again requires me first to get the innards measured and than the 3d scans once they’re available. But it’s a good starting place for a road map

Looking at my own, I’d say the biggest places of difficulty will be the back of the device where the cameras and buttons are. And the front where the game cart and sd card insert.

While the back of the device is mostly easy to deal with(keep that part on the lower back plate where the taller one will attach. The gamecart flap I’ll need to figure out a better solution
