My project this year is going to be a compact Wii portable with some special features. I also want to keep with the look of the Wii and make it look like something Nintendo would release.

-4Layer boards (PMS 2, GC+, RVL-AMP, PD 2 or 3,
-5-inch VGA screen
-Wii Classic controller buttons
-Dual tact triggers
-Bluetooth and Wi-Fi relocated
-Volume wheel and screen controls
-HDMI out
-2 GameCube controller ports
-Rumble
-Built in sensor bar and sensor bar port

At this point I have the Wii OMGWTF trimmed with LDO removed and u10 relocation. My next goal for the Wii is doing the Bluetooth and WiFi relocation. I was thinking about using the WiFi relocation flex from supertazon and YveltalGriffin.

I also started designing in Fusion360. Thanks to Wesk's Wii Classic controller scan I could integrate that. More to come!

Hi everyone, I have an update on the project

Mainly, I've been spending a long time getting the 3D model how I want it. I've had a few iterations and modifications, here is how I am doing now. A lot of this will change (mostly the stuff on the inside), but this is the main layout.

Things I've decided on since the last post or didn't mention:
-Copper sheet/fan/heatsink combo for cooling
-4 18650 batteries
-Could use a USB sensor bar for outside instead of taking internal room for sensor bar port
-GC controller ports and rumble might be dropped
-Still deciding if I should do custom PCBs. I was thinking about making a simple interface board for routing wires, kind of like the one on the Ashida
-4.3 in. screen from BuyDisplay
-Surface finish will be paint instead of just printed and sanded
-I was sure I wanted to make it white like the Wii but now I'm thinking about light blue or red for some parts

For the next update I'll be working with the trimmed Wii. A few parts are going to be coming this week

Big update time... I started off by soldering to the Wii. I was able to get all of the relocations I wanted working.

The plan before was to use WiFiflex, but unfortunately, I was having issues probably to do with soldering the plastic connector to the flex. I cut out part of the motherboard and did the Wi-Fi relocation from the test points. I saw some info that I might be able to skip the resistor array, so I soldered to the vias, and it worked for starting the game.

So, the Wii is ready to go.

The other thing is CAD modeling of the case. I'm ready to get the first print.

I really want to keep the GameCube/Wii Classic analog sticks, but they are really big. I decided to switch to LiPo batteries for the time being to make more room for the joysticks and other components. This is something I still might change in the final version if I can get everything to fit, so it lasts longer.

GameCube ports are also large. I saw that I could have a headphone jack with an adapter to fit it, but I decided most of the games I would play with other people are Wii, but I want one GameCube slot for single player. I decided to fit a wireless receiver. I have a 3rd party one, so I took it apart and I got it working powered from the PMS.

I also cut out the copper sheet. It is 2mm thick, so it was difficult with the dremel. I eventually put it in a vice and used a hacksaw. This worked really well, it just took a bit longer.

Thats all for now. Can't wait to see how the first 3D print goes.

working on No.1
thanks.
You should defiantly design some customs pcbs. that would make it a cleaner portable overall, and it would align with your goals nicely, as well as making it easier for others to build if you open sourced it in the future.

I received the first 3D print from JLC! The first image is how I got it, and the second image is after the paint. This is just basic resin.

The next step I took was figuring out what went well and what needed to change. A few of the ports weren't lined up, and screwholes needed fixing. I also changed the potentiometer volume control to buttons because it was too big. Infared LEDs also needed less space. I made the case thicker to put 18650s in instead of Lipos.

I'm going to get the triggers and buttons printed clear and put blue LEDs so it can light up. I also will add a switch on the back of the case to turn it on and off.

I thought about adding wireless charging with a qi receiver, but I figured it would make the case thicker and it wasn't worth it.

Anyways, hopefully I can start assembling it when the 3D print comes!
