Given the dockable design of the device, could there be a potential for a portable dock setup, where one could switch from the PD and Gamecube controller port dock over to a PSP-esk form factor dock for the Kawaii to slot into providing portable functionality (Screen, Li-ion batteries, on-board controller, etc)?

Theoretically, it is possible

We have already gone down that rabbit hole and concepted some ideas, it's more than possible however it will likely require a YPBPR to VGA transcoder on the "dock" side of things.

The ninjas can't stop this portablizer!

I received the anodized aluminum prototype shells from @Ding earlier this month. In person, they actually look better than the renders.

The pogo pin connector slots into the shell like so. It's held in place very securely.

I also received the internal and dock PCBs along with jigs and stencils to assemble them.

I'm very satisfied with my PCBA workflow (stenciling jig PCBs, Pixel Pump, and UYUE 946C hot plate). I only needed to fix one small bridge on the USB-C receptacle.

The dock PCB wll need a small outline edit to let the 3.5mm jacks sit flush against the PCB. For now, I just filed the undersides of the jacks flat.

Power button and bicolor LED work well. The power button is what gates 5V to the pogo pin conn.

Today, I trimmed an OMEGA for use in the Kawaii prototype.

Excuse the flux. I ran out of IPA and Kimwipes.

The tolerances in the shell are wicked tight. Something as minor as a solder joint being too tall will result in the motherboard not fitting properly.

Also, it's looking like the 1.15V tantalum will have to be replaced with a smaller one for things to fit. The Thundervolt BOM already includes two such tants so this is a non-issue.

These next photos are with all the PCBs installed inside the shell. Thankfully, all of our MCAD planning paid off and no major case edits seem to be needed.

So, what's left to do?
  • Assemble the internal PCB and test the Y/CVBS muxing
  • Final assembly of the prototype
  • Functional and thermal testing

Everytime you post, its always something insanely cool.
I honestly thought this will take a lot longer to finish just because of the volume of this project and here you are... just doing it like its nothing

Thanks, dude! That one was hand-soldered (T15-BCM2 for AVE and T15-JS02 for passives). I hit it with some SMD291 and hot air afterwards to get everything shiny, then threw it in the ultrasonic cleaner for 10 minutes.

Insane work, good job!

I feel like every time I look away from the bitbuilt community for a couple months I look back in and find something incredible, maybe one day I'll be able to have a fraction of your power to replicate one :P
